Fish Exploritory

Fish Exploratory Essay
I liked fishes essay. I can say this Pocatello is ran by the collage. I think that this is the problem for a lot of cities. It costs a arm and leg to go to collage and it keeps rising. They in my opinion are separating the rich from the pour. The rich get to go to school and achieve the impossible money is no option. They can go where ever they want to go. They can go to any school they choose. The poor have to choose to not go or go into something that will suit them that they can pay for. You hope that you are supper poor or very wealthy to go to school. I have one thing to say about this tho, If you are poor and you wish to go to school there are lots of options you can work at the collage full time and get credits for $5.00 or you can try very hard in school and get scholarships academically or athletic ones.  In high school you can take collage credits. If you pay for them in high schoolI they go towards collage. I think it just depends how bad you want it and if it is worth the sacrificed  you give to it. But society does depend of the collage. I think that the cooperation also help this by saying you must have a bachelors degree to apply. I wonder if the corporations get a kick back. There is a lot of jobs that require this so jobs for the uneducated are scarce. So society is demanding you to have education to survive. Right now most jobs are asking for a bachelors but just wait soon they will all be masters. Just to earn money for the collage. But I do wish that we had a program in the US like Fish has. It would be very helpful in our situation right now.

unit 3 response

Natalie Beech
Unit 3 Response
I choose Joshua’s Unit 3 to respond to because, I like the way he states at the end of his writing “School is a large part of our lives and everyone does a lot of growing up in an education institution. I think that is what the unit is try to get the readers to understand, that so much more happens at an education institution. To making friends and explore who you really are.”I think this is very true. I also believe that school is a necessity of life it helps you socialize and become yourself. Another part of Joshua’s essay I like is how he quotes what Theodore R. Sizer says I think he covers everything that goes on in collage. I like how Joshua says, “ The unit really push that school is not the math and English, but what the students are doing and trying to figure out while attending that school.” I agree with that a lot. I think that if you compare a home school child with a public or charted school child the academics could be on the same level but I think that the home school child would be behind in socializing and problem solving situations.

Unit 3 Thesis
“Schooling”
I believe the major topic we covered in our Unit three readings would be about school is actually about. School is not just about what we are learning, like our parents like to think. But it is also about growing up. Like Theodore R. Sizer writes in “What High School Is,” “The high school is to tough most aspects of an adolescent’s existence—mind, body, morals, values, career.” What Sizer wrote really explains Unit three, that schooling is so much more than English and math. It was way for adolescents to become who they are and what they want to be. It is a gateway to adulthood.
Rebekah Nathan wrote in “Lessons from My Year as a freshman,” “Liminal people who might otherwise have differential status in the society become equal and those who share the ritual experiences of lowliness, homogeneity, and sacred bonds. Undergraduate students bond with one another, sometimes for life, and, amid rules of suspended normality and often hardship, explore their identities, wrestle with their parents’ worlds, and wonder about their future.” What Nathan wrote just backs up what Sizer was trying to get across to his readers, and what the Unit was trying to capture in the readings presented. The unit really push that school is not the math and English, but what the students are doing and trying to figure out while attending that school. School is a large part of our lives and everyone does a lot of growing up in an education institution. I think that is what the unit is try to get the readers to understand, that so much more happens at an education institution. To making friends and explore who you really are.

In David Sedaris essay, “Giant Dreams, Midget Abilities.” he talks about three generations and how they came together through music. David’s dad loved music and always tried to involve David and his siblings. Davids dad tried to influence his children to love jazz by only playing jazz music in the house. As a child Davids dad wasn’t allowed to listen to jazz in the house. He was forced into listening to Greek music. So when davids dad played his jazz music, it was not only because he loved it, but I think it was out of spite.
Davids dad was set in his ways and was trying to get his kids to become what he desired to be himself. Inspired from his own misfortunes he provided the kids with opportunities he didn't have as a child due to growing up underprivileged with Greek immigrant parents. Having an ear for music he aspired and assumed that the children would naturally inherit this skill.
Natalie Beech

I found it ironic that the same thing he loathed about his parents as a child is exactly what he did to his own kids.  Now David’s dad is doing this to the kids only playing jazz music in the house. Davids dad decided to buy instruments and lessons for David and his siblings. Davids dad hired a music teacher who worked at a local music store for davids gaiter lessons. Davids dad was very excited to get the family together to play in a band. He thought this was a brilliant idea. He just assumed everyone would be right on board with him. Secretly, the kids were not excited and just wanted to please there father. So Davids father took him to the music store for his first lesson.
The teacher was a midget named Mr. Mancini. He was a guy who was just like Davids dad.  Mister Mancini thought anyone could play the gaiter. I thought that Mr. Mancini made lots of sexual references during the lessons.  It seemed to surprise David. He said it made him think of things that he didn't want to, like the sex of his guttier. David seemed pretty innocent coming into the class. He was at such a young age trying to understand his own sexuality ,homosexual. Than his gaiters sexuality.
There are a few things in the story that led me to my assumption of David being homosexual. First was how he petitioned for a brand name vacuum cleaner.  How he commented about the flute, how he named his guitar “Oliver”, a guys name not a girls, and how he admitted not noticing anyone’s breast lately. I think guys notice that stuff every day. I  especially thought David being homosexual  when Mr. Mancini said ‘’I don't swing that way”.
One night David saw Mr. Mancini at the mall. David related himself to Mister Mancini because he saw how much of a wee outsider and a miss fit Mister Mancici was. People were being mean to him telling him to go back to Oz and looking at Mister Mancici weird. David says, “We were each a man trapped inside of a boys body. Each of us was talented in his own way. And the fact how they both hated 12 year old boys”.  I think this experience helped David noticed how his personality made him the man he is. That he shouldn’t change just because some stuck up bad mannered bully.s pick on him or Mister Mancini.  It helped him realize he should be who he is.
David kept going to lessons and finally told Mister Mancini that he wasn't enjoying lessons and insisted wanted to wright jingles. He finally came out who he was and Mister Mancini just shot him down and said he not interested he didn’t want any part of jingles he is a gaiter teacher. This part of the story made me mad because Mister Mancici was made fun of at the mall and here is little David pounding his heart out and all Mister Mancici does is be mean about it and looking at his jingles as a stupid idea. That right there is being a bully. So after David pours his heart  out he decides to inform his father he will not be retiring to gaiter lessons again.
I told the generational differences n this story by its  electronics. Davids dad would rather listen to the radio than watch T.V.  But I’m sure that is a step up with Davids dad because when he was little they just listened to the record player.  Also it was interesting when David noticed how his personality made him the man he is today. I enjoyed how it all came together through music.
I thinks its interesting how one subject or intreats can bring a different generation together. And the same subject or intreats separates them. At the end of Davids essay David and his siblings all go sit in with the mother and watch T.V. instead of listen music. I think that says a lot about the generational gap. They were tired of pleasing there father and finally just said whatever and did there own thing and how it separated them also. Helped David become the man he is today.

Lu's Response

Lu's Response

Natalie Beech  Lu’s  Response
I chose Tyler’s writing on Lu because he gets straight to the point. He summarizes the story. And answered how he felt the reason why she had trouble expressing her feelings when her mother died. I think deep down she held a little anger toward her mother but at the end I think that she appreciated her teaching different cultures to her. It made her into a well rounded person. In Tyler's essay I like how he mentioned how Lu’s mom went silent and apologized about teaching the kids English and the western culture. I think that as a mom you look back at what you wish you would have changed. If you really look back and evaluate your parenting mistakes, for the most part, it has not only taught your child but it has taught you. And it makes both of you a stronger person. I think Lu’s mom did this, but at the same time I think she in the end was happy to give her kids all the diversity.  I wonder if she was pressured into saying sorry because of what her society and religion expected of her as a person.  But as a mom I think she did the right thing to care so much about being a good mom.
Tyler Montgomery

Exploratory writing Lu

Lu’s essay was about how her education was dominated by memories of confusion and frustration; when her mother was dying she was unable to speak about the confusion and frustration with her mother. I think that this was cause she was raised at home learning English and reading Dickens and other writers at that time period. Her parents wanted to make her cultured along with this came persecution for her learning of western society and the modernized world. When she would go to school she was oppressed under the communist regime of Moa Tse-tung. Under his rule she could not openly express herself and the culture that she was taught at home. I think that she had trouble expressing her feelings to her mother when she was about to die because before she went silent she apologized about teaching the kids English and the western culture, but Lu did not feel this way about it. She says in her essay about how it helped her become who she was thru the both the learning and the persecution she went thru under the communist regime. She say that it developed her into what she is and was glad about that her parents were able to teach her about the western society

I chose Kellys blog again because I agree with her for the most part. I agree that collage is a future investment but also an opportunity of learning. If I could start my own business I would. I would take a few classes but not four years of collage. Im sure that the extent of all my classes gives me a taste of different experiences that I could use throughout my life. but at the same time some of my classes I believe like Acad is very stupid and i could do it on my own in one day. But society expects a degree to be hired. So therefor we have to do it if we want a job we enjoy. I like how Kelly says she is happy to work on a farm and can live day by day. It is true there is so many things people have and they trade it for work. I also would rather work and be comfortable and still have time for the things I like and enjoy. I also like how she put links in because it always make the paper interesting and more visual. Which I learn better when there is a visual aid.
Fish states that the “view of value and the good life has a definite appeal”. I think this appeal amounts to a hill of beans.  It is saying that if you invest  in an education than you will get a good job and if you get that good job, THEN you should start paying back on the investment. And you want the good job and more money because you will have more “things”. Since I have started college I have been a very unhappy individual. The more people strive for the “good life” or to succeed, the more they feel like their Freaking head is going to blow off. I actually had a discussion with my friends over dinner this weekend about this very subject.  Most of my friends are very successful and work very hard to succeed.  All of them feel like they are a time bomb about to explode. The pressure in my opinion is not worth all the “stuff”. I was much happier when I was working on ranches making just enough to live on.  My life was not complicated, I enjoyed all the best things that are free and I had virtually no stress. Life was good.  I’m not saying work is bad or success, but at what price?  We think we need all these things and that “civilization” is so great, but is it really? My friend sent me a video clip of Mike Rowe from dirty jobs. In this clip he states that people with these jobs that other people might view as horrifying or lowly are the happiest people he’s met.  So if it wasn’t for the fact that I really wanted a degree in rangeland management so I can do what I want in life and not what is successful, There is absolutely no way in hell I would go to college.

Midterm Social Networking through technology

Natalie Beech
English 1101
Social Networking through Technology.
Social networking is our new way of life. It is a way to build and reflect on social networks or social relations among people. Social Networking is the subject that interested me the most out of unit 1, 2, and 3. You can advertise for your business, promote yourself and meet new people through social technology.
The earliest social networking website started in the form of generalized online communication such as the WELL(1985) , Theglobe.com (1994), Geocities (1994) and the Tripod.com (1995). These sights brought people together to interact with each other through chat rooms, and share personal information and ideas around any topics via personal homepage publishing tools which was a precursor to the blogging phenomenon.  This lead to Frienster and than Myspace. By 2005 Myspace became the biggest of them all. Facebook was launched in 2004 within the collage community Finally in 2006 Facebook opened up to the non US collage community.  Facebook is a social networking service and website. It is the deffiniton of Social Networking.  It was founded in Cambridge , Massachusetts by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. It serves world wide. The Revenue is US $3.71 billion as of 2011. There are over 845 million active Facebook accounts. 41% of the USA has a Facebook account.  I always look at my Facebook. I stay in touch for people birthdays and catch up with friends. Facebook keeps you always connected. You can use Facebook for many things such as social networking, dating, making friends, sending messages, join intreats, user groups, organizations by school, workplace, or chartists. There are games people play on Facebook.  They are using Facebook to get school class reunions together. It is becoming everything. I check my Facebook account more than my hotmail account. A movie about Facebook was made. Here is a link to a trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHkYEC-UfTo  Facebook is now starting to sell items on peoples pages. They are also starting Facebook stocks. Facebook is valued for stocks. They say its worth 100 billion. Each stock is jumped to $44.00. They may push the cost even higher when the stocks go public. Right now it is just privet trading.  Facebook is growing rapidly and will be worth much more over the years. It is a tool for everything.
We just held an event. Usually when you have a event you advertise through the paper, word of mouth or signs. But our biggest way to advertise for our event was through Facebook. I called the paper to tell them about the event  and they said, “I saw that on Facebook.” Facebook is a free way to advertise and it defiantly helps to get you events word out.  Social networking through technology is now the every day activity.
Another type of social networking is Craig’s List. This is a network that communicates free classified ads, jobs, housing, personal and for sale items, services,  community gigs, resumes, and discussion forms. In the personal ads you can find dating and more. They made a movie  based off of a true story about the Craig’s List Killer  It is about a man who looked in the personal ads on Craig’s lists. He went to meet the woman and it ended badly. Here is a link to this trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-zMX7Lk0tE  Dating online has risen the total us population in 2007 48% have tried to date online but only 17% of those people actually stay together for marriage. The dating industry has become a $1.8 billion dollar industry. It is coming more and more popular with all of the online social networking like Facebook.  But statics say most of the online relationship don't last.
YouTube is also a recent social phenomena. It has given the Millennium generation the name as the,” Look At Me Generation. “ There are so many YouTube videos. People have became famous from posting there own video. Justin Bieber became famous from his YouTube post.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J65D6fgpoGg  I has given many people lots of opportunity to be known and to prove there talents. I can get on you tube to learn how to do many things from changing your car oil to how to correctly put on eye shadow. You-tube is very informative. I have a skateboarding video on you tube where I was dropping in on a skateboard that has 12 wheels and your feet are strapped in. I dropped down a quarter pipe and there is a huge foam pit that you do tricks into. Well I didn't make it to the foam pit I crashed and ended up with a concussion. Luckily we were filming this so we could put it on youtube. I did notice you get a lot of hits if you label your video in a funny different manner. A name that will interest people. So we named my. “chick gets knocked out going into foam pit.” Hahah here is the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va3KaPz5o6o  You tube is very addictive and you can watch videos all day. It is very entertaining.

Celebrities are using Twitter more and more. It goes strait to your phone also. Celebs use this so people will follow them. Sports teams also do this. It increases there popularity. Most people think that it is them tweeting but it is probably there publicist.
Schools are using social technology more for classes. People can get there assignments online, get your degree online and like in our class blog online. Blogger is personal journal published on the world wide web. As of February 16, 2011 there were over 156 million public blogs in existence.
Before all of this technology it took a long time to just mail a letter.  Now it goes straight to our Iphone. I don’t know what I would do with out technology. We relay on it so much. I can I Chat with my friends and family over Skype. I can message them from far away and they will receive it in seconds. All of the apps for my phone from map quest to Angry Birds keep me busy and provide me with all of the tools I need. I use my phone to do bills, check my email, Facebook, listen to music, a flashlight, google, reminders, watching movies, and taking pictures. It is the main thing I use to communicate.
The amount of time spent communicating online is a lot especially with the millennial generation. I would say personally I spend 3 to 4 hours a day on internet, school, work, movies, or just TV episodes. The amount of time spent on the world wide web is the majority of it. On page 63  the Pew Research did a survey on, “ How Millennial Are You?” I found this interesting. There is more information about what makes the Millennial generation on page 60. They claim we the millennial generation uses  technology the most amount of time. I agree because we use it in our daily life. It is so much easier to get information off of google. Than to get it out of a book. It takes you much more time to find it in a book that to type the key words in. At work I use the internet to communicate with all of the customers. I advertise on Facebook for the company. So of coarse we use technology more to communicate. Its in our life a lot more now than ever. It is socially acceptable and is in high demand.
I can only imagine the future with social networking through technology. It has changed our generation so much. Just wait to see what it is going to be like in 25 years. Or even in 10 years. Crazy how fast it changes. Social networking is huge! It is the new way of life for us. If you can’t embrace it you will be lost. Because, it is the foundation of our society. With out it our fast passed life's would be like a old western still taking 3 days to receive a letter.
Relaying on technology to socialize is a necessity. It is almost scary how much we relay on technology. If we had a major break down with our technology. Our life would be over. All the money in the banks would be separated, our new way of communication would be over and we would actually have to talk to people face to face. It would slow down our life’s. Technology helps us in many ways. Social technology is the new way of communication and our life.

RESPONSE TO LAMS

Natalie
English 1101
MY RESPONSE TO LAMS ESSAY “I TWEET, THEREFORE I AM”
I choose Kelly’s “I tweet therefor I am” essay to respond to. I like how she compares how her grandfather has recored just like we are recording. The only difference is we use better technology. It makes me think about how the Egyptians wrote on the wall with pictures to record there life. Kelly makes me realize that recording has started forever ago. We have been recording our life's much more ever since the video camera came out. Now it is just easier because we have cameras on our phone, and it usually is always with us which makes here statement by Chris Cramer true, “the entire world has become news gatherers-some of the most extraordinary events reported are by ordinary citizens. I also go straight to You-tube to find information and pictures about events. I defiantly don't read the paper. That is so 1990’s haha. No web is just faster and, I fell for the most part more informative.  She points out how we use Facebook which we do because it is just at our fingertips and its a great way to inform and connect with people. I like how Kelly explained who Chris Cramer was and the questions she brought up about wondering why people record there life history. Good Job.
Extends
“The entire world has become news gatherers-some of the most extraodinary events are reported by ordinary citizens.” This statement was made by Chris Cramer, global editor of Multimedia and I really have to agree with that statement. If I am curious to see a natural disaster for instance, the first place I go is to youtube to watch footage, because that is where I am most likely to find the best footage.  It’s usually from someone who is really there and really experiencing it, not a reporter from the sidelines.
Distinguishes
“I tweet, Therefore I am” as Lam says, has a lot of truth to it. When I first read Lams idea about people believing that “we do not fully exist without some sort of electronic imprint in the virtual world, a digital projection of ourselves”, I agreed, but as I thought aout it more I started to question why people record everything on “twitter” or “facebook”. Really, people have been doing some form of “recording” as long as history has recorded. My grandfather has a pile of slides that would take days to go through and isn’t that the same kind of recording of ones life? He shares those slides with anyone who will watch them. Today we are just doing it in massive amounts in less time with a much bigger audience.
